Biography[]

Early Life[]

Born a witch to the Berg clan, Aigévandir grew up on Tír Nan Óg. As a teen, she developed her sea magic and received her kelpie, who she named Buiasc (beat someone with a fish). As an adult, she completed her mandatory military service and transferred to the reserves. She took a position as a fisherwoman, using her powers over the sea to great effect. It was in this position that she met Vaja Cartir, a fairy cargo hauler with the Artic Fleet. She was immediately enraptured by the colorful fairy and challenged her to a courtship duel. Vaja accepted and promptly kicked her butt using her speed. Vaja was impressed by Aigévandir's combat abilities and agreed to the courtship. During this time, WW2 started, and they were called to action, where Aigévandir would gain the rank of captain, putting her in control of her own small vessel. They both survived and would eventually marry and have a daughter, Jenyé Cartir.

The Darkest Day[]

When Jenyé was just a baby, the Wizards of the Black Circle attacked the island of Tír Nan Óg, holding Queen Morgana hostage. Vaja joined the fight against the wizards as Aigévandir protected Jenyé, but they failed. Vaja had her wings ripped off by Anagan mid highspeed aerial fight, resulting in a fatal crash. The wizards attempted to take Jenyé's powers, but she was saved by being born a witch.

Aigévandir joined the evacuation, carrying Jenyé and two other children on her back. They reached the Arctic Fleets, but shortly after they arrived, the wizards struck and took down the fleets before moving on to Amazonia and Nipaluna Island.

All the fairies were either captured and killed, and many witches were also killed, leaving the Arctic Fleets, Amazonia, and Nipaluna Island severely underpopulated and Sibylla's Cave completely uninhabited, and the Dark Guardian rendered Tír Nan Óg uninhabitable, forcing the remaining witches of the island to seek refuge in the remaining countries. The Arctic Fleets had too few people to run all the ships, forcing them to drydock most of them in Nipaluna Island, effectively leaving the empire with only two countries.

Becoming Refugees[]

Fearing that the wizards might some day come back for them, many of the remaining witches of the empire, particularly those with children, fled. Aigévandir took herself and Jenyé to one of the few magic nexuses not guarded over by the empire, the American Nexus, as English was the only other langue she knew.

In America, in order to blend in, Aigévandir decided to change their names. Jenyé's name was able to be anglicized to Jenny Carter, but there's no English version of Aigévandir, forcing her to adopt a new name entirely, Willow Carter.

She used her magic to forge legal papers for herself and Jenny, making them "natural born" citizens of the US and allowing her to apply for government aid, such as housing assistance and childcare. Willow found herself another job as a fisherwoman and has been able to provide herself and Jenny a decent life.

Meeting Klaus & Roxy[]

US schools take issue with dyed hair. Willow learned that the hard way when Jenny's school called her in regards to her daughter's pink bangs. Willow went to the school with Jenny's baby photo, one of the few items she had on her when she evacuated the island. At the school, she encountered another little girl with pink and blond hair, sitting with Jenny outside the principal's office, and her father. The two were there for the same reason Jenny and Willow were. After they convinced the principal that those are their daughters' natural hair colors, the two adults bonded over the ridiculousness of the situation and their similar circumstances as the children bonded over their similar hair colors. This fateful encounter eventually led to Willow and Klaus becoming friends and becoming oddparents (Children of Mjora equivalent to godparents) to each other's children.

Some time in the following years, Willow and Klaus attempted a romantic relationship, but Willow still wasn't over Vaja's death, and Klaus felt like he was betraying his wife whenever he attempted another relationship, so it never went further than a kiss.

Appearance[]

Aigévandir has shoulder-length, blond hair, sea green eyes, a light complexion, and a swimmer's body. Like many Sylvans, she is over six-feet tall. Due to her job, she wears little makeup and wears anise oil to cover up the smell of fish. When she does were makeup, it's sea colors.

Witch Form[]

In her witch form, she wears a wetsuit that's reinforced around her sides and stomach and with fins on the calves, straps that loop around her feet, and sleeves that go up over her thumb. She has reinforced her suit with sea blue, light armor that covers her chest, back, shins and knees, forearms, and outer thighs and a head piece that covers her forehead, the forward part of her crown, and the sides of her face. Her armor has fish scale detailing, and her forearm guards had fin detailing.

Work Clothes[]

For her work, she wears a waterproof suit under fluorescent orange fishing overalls.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Abilities: like all Terrestrial Magic wielders, Willow has enhanced speed, strength, healing, durability, and emotional energy absorption. As the Witch of the Sea, she has the ability to fly, control water, control sea life, and generate salt.
  • Mutations: the mutagenic properties of Terrestrial magic has given her the ability to survive underwater. Her musculature, particularly her diaphragm and other breathing muscles, and bones are denser and stronger than average, she has a fully developed nictitating membrane that covers her eyes when she's under water and bends light so she can see clearly, her lungs have a far greater number of blood vessels to extract oxygen, she can decompress quickly, and when her mammalian dive reflex is activated, the capillaries in her lungs expand to accommodate water. Her spine also has an enhanced range of motion, allowing for greater hydrodynamic fluidity.
  • Functional immortality: like all wielders of Terrestrial and Emotional Magic, upon awakening her powers, Willow's aging slowed to a near stop. She does still age, but no Terrestrial Fairy or Witch has ever died of age related causes, and no one knows exactly how long they can live for.

Weaknesses[]

  • Heat and acid damage: the Terrestrial magic healing factor is great at healing physical damage, but chemical damage takes far longer to heal and could leave permanent damage if severe enough.
  • Inability to regenerate limbs: the Terrestrial magic healing factor is dependent on the skeletal structure to repair damage, so if the bone is amputated and not reattached, the limb will not grow back.
  • Cerebral hypoxia: although the Terrestrial magic healing factor can repair damage to the brain, starving the brain of oxygen, whether through suffocation, drowning, or beheading, is one of the ways they can be killed.
  • Butchering: the Terrestrial magic healing factor is incredible and allows them to survive the seemingly impossible, but it doesn't make them Deadpool. If their pieces are separated, or they're hacked into too many pieces, they will not be able to repair themselves.

Buiasc[]

Buiasc, a sporting line kelpie, is Aigévandir's war mount and has dutifully served her witch for almost a hundred years. After bonding with Aigévandir, her body remained black, but her main and tail turned a shimmering sea blue with dark blue accents. As with all kelpies, her eyes naturally glow an amanous white. As a kelpie, Buiasc can walk on water and transform into a hippocampus form that lets her breath and dive under water and swim up to 40 knots. Buiasc is generally aloof and likes to be alone whenever she's not needed. Her name is the Sylvan word for 'cornobble', which is a verb that means "to slap someone with a fish".

Buiasc's amulet[]

Buiasc's amulet is an aquamarine crystal cut into a hexagon shape protected by a body designed to blend into Aigévandir's armor with the same scale detailing. She typically carries it in a pouch attached to her belt. Being that the amulet was created almost a hundred years ago, the techniques and materials used to create it are less refined than its modern contemporaries. This means its crystal is far larger and lacks the protective dome seen on modern amulets.

Personality[]

Pre-Darkest Day[]

Aigévandir, like many Sylvans, was devious and conniving and enjoyed combat. She took pride in her trickster and combat abilities. She was more serious than many of her contemporaries, making her a good fit for an officer position, but she was still light and fun-loving. She loved her friends, sisters, family, and empire. She was a devout follower of the teaching of Sage Sylva: survive against hardship, all life on Earth are Mjora’s children, grow strong, do not waste what you take, protect and guide, worship through action, and seek balance.

Post-Darkest Day[]

The loss of her wife darkened Willow. It did more damage to her than anything the Axis did. Her one and only purpose in life became to protect her daughter, and she would do anything to ensure her safety, even if that meant going against the teachings of Sage Sylva. She became closed off and refused to make connections in case of the day they needed to pack up and leave, with the exception of two people.

Etymology[]

  • 'Aigévandir' is derived from the Irish word for 'ocean,' 'aigéan', the Norwegian word for 'wander', 'vandre', and the suffix 'ir', which is an Old Norse suffix meaning 'er'.
  • The willow is a tree that symbolizes humans' capability to withstand hardship, loss, and difficult emotions.
  • Her maiden name 'Berg' means hill/mountain. Her family originally came from a mountainous region of what is modern day Sweden.

Trivia[]

  • Willow likes cars and engines and enjoys watching Formula 1. After she came to the US, she was shocked by how much cars had changed in 50 years, going from the clunky deathtrap war machines of WW2 to impressive works of engineering that civilians used every day. She began to study them, which developed into a love of and skill with engines. She also just loves things that go fast, as evidenced by her choice of mate.
  • Willow is an ellan, a witch that lost their coven.
